Your bedroom is your safe place, where you go to switch off and relax. It can be sacred, a chance for you to escape, get cosy and forget about life worries. Can you fully forget though, if your room is a mess and cluttered? Not to worry though, you’ve come to the perfect place. Let me guide you step-by-step on how to declutter your bedroom and turn your chaos into calm.
I’ll give you my bedroom organisation ideas to make life simpler. It’s so easy to feel overwhelmed when it comes to decluttering. When everything is everywhere, it can just seem like too much, making you want to quit before you even begin. When you’re feeling like this, the best thing to do is just start small.

Start small, clear your space
Pick somewhere manageable in your bedroom, start by clearing your surfaces of any mess, plates left over from snacks the night before and glasses you’ve accumulated over the time since you last had the urge to declutter.
Once the surfaces are clear you will start to feel lighter and now you have begun to make progress. Next, move on to what is lying around on the floor – that pesky floordrobe! Pick up any loose clothing and put it in the laundry basket, this is a task which can be done quickly and instantly feels like there is more space in your once messy room.
Now that the floor is tidy of any loose clothing, you can now get out your helpful friend Henry (other vacuums are available) and suck up any leftover mess from the floor. This is also a good opportunity to rehome any random items lying around that you haven’t quite managed to choose somewhere for yet.
So, your surfaces are clear and the carpet is visible, it’s time to declutter what’s hidden behind closed doors. Before you do, it’s best to get your action piles ready.
Action piles for bedroom organisation
It’s good to keep action piles so that you can keep on top of your bedroom organisation, so it doesn’t get cluttered once again. Below are the piles I like to use when decluttering my client’s bedrooms.
- Keep Pile – for items that belong in your bedroom
- Donate Pile – for things that need rehoming or regifting
- Different room – for stuff that’s found itself in the wrong room
- Recycle – items that need throwing away but can be recycled
- Throwaway – this is my last resort pile, for items that cannot be recycled

Tackle your bedside tables
Open up the drawers on your bedside table – brace yourself, this can be like an explosion has happened since you were last in there. One by one, go through them. Totally empty the drawer or cupboard shelf and wipe clean then remove anything that you cannot remember the last time you used it.
Remove any items that have been put in there when you need somewhere quick to store something. Old wires, loose batteries, random bits and bobs can be removed and given a new home or recycled. Then when complete, only recharge the drawer with the essentials required in your bedside table. Remember, your action piles are your friend here. Reorganising your bedroom drawer doesn’t have to be hard work, it just needs to be done, and one by one you will get there.
Ready for your bedroom wardrobe declutter?
Once your drawers have been organised, the next port of call is to declutter your bedroom wardrobes. Whilst you’re doing this you have a chance to categorise; wear regularly, wear occasionally, don’t wear at all. Within these piles, each should be separated into the type of clothing: t-shirts, trousers, jumpers, dresses etc. Go through your clothes and put them in each of these piles. Once the piles are complete, it’s time to reorganise your wardrobes the most convenient way for you, putting the clothes you wear the most in the easiest place to grab, the ones you wear occasionally can be put behind or in harder to reach places.
One way to do this is by using the natural cycle of the seasons. Pulling all your spring and summer wear forward when you need them, and even vac-packing or boxing up all your thick jumpers and coats you won’t need until winter comes back around.
For the items that don’t get worn at all… Well, they can be gifted to a charity shop or sold online for a little extra cash in your pocket. Don’t just throw these away as you can help declutter the world, whilst decluttering your bedroom.

Accessories and dressing table
The final steps to declutter your bedroom is organising your accessories and sorting through your technology.
Go through any jewellery and accessories you have and arrange them in a place and order that works for you. Perhaps have a box or stand that they can go on so that everything is in one place rather than where you took them off at. Like your clothes, if there is anything you do not use, stop and think, “would this be more appreciated in a new home?” If the answer is yes, you know what to do.
Last but not least, prepare yourself for a dressing table that works for you. Fed up of wires being here, there and everywhere? This is your chance to put them in one place and whilst you’re at it, detangle them and store them neatly in an easily accessible place. When doing this, I tend to check each one still works before organising where they go.
Follow these steps and your bedroom will be decluttered in no time so you can get back to what it’s there for, relaxing, getting cosy and snuggling up in the ultimate comfort zone.
Remember, decluttering doesn’t have to be hard, it just needs to be done in a way that works for you. Break down tasks into small and manageable steps, then in no time you will be the champion of decluttering.
